Structural Integration is an original and scientifically validated bodywork series designed to achieve the goal of an integrated body, moving with grace and a minimum of effort. It was developed over 50 years ago by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, PhD.  It is a re-education of the body through movement and touch. It enables the body to be supported and not dragged down by the force of gravity, and restores a remarkable amount of lift, length and flexibility.  It is considered to be the "gold standard" of bodywork therapies.

Clients repeatedly report:

  • Relief from chronic pain
  • Greater flexibility
  • A feeling of lightness and fluidity
  • Better balance
  • Increased breathing capacity
  • Increased energy
  • Better posture, often appearing taller & slimmer - some people actually re-gain 1 more inches in height

Clients also report positive psychological benefits - less stress, greater self-confidence, and improved ability to handle life’s changes and make difficult decisions.

How does Structural Integration work?

All the major systems in your body - circulatory, digestive, nervous, musculoskeletal, and organs - are wrapped in the connective tissue called fascia. A healthy and balanced connective tissue system’s characteristics are flexibility, elasticity, length and resilience. Unfortunately, over the years, your tissue absorbs and responds to the negative force of overuse, accidents, sports injuries, prolonged periods of sitting at computers, illness, injury, emotional trauma and plain everyday stress. The result is shortening, thickening, and dehydrating of the tissue which impairs joint mobility and muscle function. You then feel chronic pain, stiffness, decreased flexibility and impaired movement.

It is also this short, thickened, dehydrated tissue that causes you to “shrink” in height as you grow older.

Working with you through movement and touch over 10 sessions, a practitioner systematically releases this short, thickened tissue, thereby restoring a remarkable amount of lift, length, and fluidity to your body. You then look and feel better.

How does Structural Integration Feel?

The area being worked on will vary in sensation depending upon injuries to the area or if there is any chronic holding pattern. Feelings can range from pleasurable release to momentary discomfort if tissues are very contracted. We work together at your level and at your pace. We have worked successfully with both children and adults, ages 8 to 80.

Does Structural Integration Last?

Yes! Photographs taken of clients years after the basic 10 series show that changes were still present and structure often further improved. Keep in mind, however, that as life changes, your body will also change in response to new injuries, accidents, and emotional stresses.

Are there different "brands" of Structural Integration?

Structural Integration is the generic name for the process.  Over the years, consistent with Dr. Rolf's vision of having many schools, a number of the original students of Dr. Rolf have started training institutions under various names, some of which have chosen to undergo the trademark process.  The most well-known of these are the Rolf® Institute of Structural Integration (trademarks Rolfing® and Rolfer®), the Guild for Structural Integration, and the Hellerwork Institute (trademark Hellerwork®). While there may be some variations in techniques or methods, these institutes all follow very closely Dr. Rolf's original "recipe".  At the July 2004 annual meeting of the Rolf Institute which was attended by practitioners of most of the major schools, there was agreement that all schools teach Dr. Rolf's art and that the differences among approaches are relatively minor. If was remarked by one long time practitioner "We all carry the same torch for Ida's work.  We all have the same high standards of integrity and quality."  If you have an interest in learning about how the approaches might differ, you can contact the International Association of Structural Integrators which recently published a very informative comparison.

At Manual Therapy Solutions, our practitioners have been trained by the Rolf Institute and the Guild for Structural Integration and have received continuing education in Structural Integration by the Rolf Institute and/or Guild for Structural Integration as well in other complementary therapeutic approaches from a number of other institutions.

On this website you will see testimonials and articles derived from both the Rolf Institute and the Guild for Structural Integration.  We will generally use the generic term of Structural Integration in the body of this website.  In the links and articles you might see trademark names such as Rolfing® Structural Integration depending on the source of the material.
